The earth was without form and void,
and darkness was over the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

Then the Lord said,
“My Spirit shall not abide in man forever,
for he is flesh:
his days shall be years.”

So in the morning his spirit was troubled,
and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt and all its wise men.
Pharaoh told them his dreams,
but there was none who could interpret them to Pharaoh.

And Pharaoh said to his servants,
“Can we find a man like this,
in whom is the Spirit of God?”

But when they told him all the words of Joseph,
which he had said to them,
and when he saw the wagons that Joseph had sent to carry him,
the spirit of their father Jacob revived.

Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way.
When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph,
before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit.
